Indoor Air Quality

indoor iaq monitorIndoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the level of atmosphere pollution within a confined space, particularly as it relates to the health and comfort of the occupants.

In the past few decades, energy conservation measures have led to airtight building construction that can create problems with IAQ. Frequently the ventilation systems are set to minimize the amount of fresh air entering and circulating within the building. This restriction impacts indoor air by allowing a build-up of contaminants within the building that are not properly removed.

Indoor pollutants range from minor irritants such as dust and animal dander, to major concerns like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and TVOCs (chemical vapours) that may come from building materials and furnishings.

Canary Air Quality Assurance technology gives individuals a fast, reliable, cost effective method of looking at the air quality of their homes and work environments.

Easy to understand report outlining all six key factors

Six key air quality factors, recognized as critical by Canada's Healthy Indoors Partnership (HIP), are analyzed and compared to acceptable levels. These factors include: temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, particles and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs).

Temperature is a measure of the relative warmth or coolness of the air. If the air in your home is too cold, occupants may become uncomfortable, restless and easily distracted. If it is too warm, occupants may become uncomfortable, sweat more and tire quickly.

Relative Humidity is a measure of moisture content in the air. You may feel uncomfortable if the air in your home is too dry or too humid. In addition, excessive humidity contributes to the growth of mould and other microbials that can affect your health.

Carbon Dioxide is a colorless, odourless, gas that people exhale. It is often used to gauge the effectiveness of ventilation. However, a high reading can also indicate a problem with a fuel burning appliances and how it is vented to the outdoors.

Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless, gas that is highly toxic to humans even at low concentrations. If your home has 'non-acceptable' levels you should take corrective action immediately.

Indoor Particles are very small bits of liquid and solid contaminants that become suspended in the atmosphere. Most are not visible to the naked eye. A high reading may mean that your home has high levels of dust, mould or plant spores, pollen, dust mite fragments, pet dander, or bacteria.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large class of organic (carbon-based) chemicals that are present in almost all buildings. These chemicals are given off by a wide range of common household products, including personal care and cleaning products, plastics, paints and solvents, and can circulate freely throughout the home. A high TVOC reading indicates that the total load of volatile organic compounds in your home is higher than it should be. The exact risk varies considerably from person to person and from one VOC to the next.
